Recent Injury? Forget PRICE, follow the POLICE!
Anyone who has had the misfortune of suffering an acute injury will no doubt have come across the PRICE guidelines (Protection, Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation). This quick and useful acronym which advises on how to manage an injury in the early stages has helped many an athlete young and old, weekend warrior and professional!
However, times and research have moved on and as a result the PRICE acronym has now changed to POLICE. Despite appearances, this in no way involves the boys (and girls!) in blue but relates more to the ‘Rest’ part of the old PRICE guidelines. ‘Rest’ has now been changed to ‘Optimal Loading’, physio speak for managing the injury with an appropriate amount of movement and weight bearing to stimulate the healing tissue to be strong and functional, whilst ensuring that there is enough protection and rest for your body to heal effectively and for your symptoms to improve.
How do you know when to rest and when to move? There is no one size fits all recommendation unfortunately. The answer depends on:
- the area of injury,
- the grade of injury,
- the irritability,
- your age,
- body type ….
Too much rest and your healed tissue may not be strong enough to withstand what you need it to do leading to re-injury, too little and your recovery may take that bit longer.
